Talk on queer acceptance in Indian cinema held at NFAI

From Bollywood films like Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga to OTT platform shows where gay characters are protagonists - post the reading down of Section 377; there has been a notable shift in Indian cinema towards inclusive storylines and characters. But this is just the beginning, agreed the LGBTQI+ community members while discussing the topic at the recently organised Advait-Pune International Queer Film Festival.

Unlike last year, where only foreign film were showcased, this year’s lineup at the Advait-Pune International Queer Film Festival featured two Indian LGBTQI+ themed movies – Evening Shadows and Malayalam film Sanchharam - besides Sri Lankan film Frangipani and Hollywood film Love, Simon. “Screening Indian films helps the audience connect with the subject in a more impactful manner. The community members can relate to the journey and stories. Last year, we showcased only foreign cinema, which is not wrong, but the local audience couldn’t connect with the storylines,” said organiser Bindumadhav.
