Story: Gungun, Bajrang and Vakil are weak in studies. They skip school and go to a nearby town to attend the show of their favorite magician Surya Samrat, when they learn that he is performing there. To clear the final examinations, they write to the magician to help because they believe that only he can help them with his magic tricks. To their surprise, they receive a reply and gifts. The magician tells them to teach all the things that they need to study to a small doll, which, in turn, will help them during examinations.
Review: Dhh has been a talking point ever since it bagged the award for the best feature film in Gujarati at the 65th National Film Awards. It is also being talked about for Naseeruddin Shah’s cameo in the film, and for the cutest trio of Kahaan, Karan Patel and Kuldeep Sodha. Somewhere, the storyline of the movie reminds you of Kirtan Patel’s movie Back Bencher but this film projects a different canvas altogether. Director Manish Saini has chosen an interesting backdrop of a small town and instead of trying to be preachy, he has kept it light-hearted, realistic and vivacious. We super like the doodle-art during the title credits and the very interesting dialogues. Either you go ROFL or carry a smile when you hear dialogues like ‘Mahatma Gandhi nu hathiyaar laakdi hati’ or a reference to the headline ‘Jaadugar Surya Samrat e Bharat-Pakistan ni sarhad gaayab kari’. And with that reference, kids ask for a bus ticket to Pakistan! A good screenplay, realistic locations and characters make you relate to almost everyone in the movie. Music done by Meghdhanush is another good element of this movie, especially the song ‘Udankhatolu’ that has both sad and happy versions, which seamlessly blend into the narrative. You may find the movie a bit slow in the first half but then, the second half is exciting and things move at a rapid pace.
Amit Divetia is apt as the school principal, while Brijendra Kala and Sunil Vishrani add more fun with their flawless performances. Naseeruddin Shah is awesome as Jadugar Surya Samrat and the audience is going to love Archan Trivedi for his portrayal of a loving dadaji. Even as all these seasoned actors lift the movie to a different level, the real showstoppers are the kids— Kahaan, Karan and Kuldeep as Gungun, Kapil (Vakil) and Bajrang. They are natural and bring in the much-needed element of innocence to a film like this.
This one’s a family entertainer that carries with it a small and sweet message as well. It’s near perfect and certainly heart-touching!
