Gujarati film songs warm up to rap numbers
Gujarati film songs are getting a makeover. And this makeover is a tad funky that is intended to attract a lot of youngsters who connect to some peppy and funky beats. Picture this, you have films like Deshbook, Whisky Is Risky, Kyare Jaishu Pattaya? Aapne To Dhirubhai et al which have used rap in some way or the other as a means to grab eyeballs. While the industry unanimously agrees that one always looks up at singer-actor Devang Patel as a benchmark when it comes to conceiving of a rap number for a Gujarati song, there is much more brewing in the Gujarati music industry leading to a lot of changes in the notes.

So, from music composers to singers, many are experimenting on Gujarati rap that is a heady cocktail of Hindi and Gujarati lyrics. Says singer-music composer Arvind Vegda, One cant ignore the contribution of Devang Patel and Jaykar Bhojak when one talks about Gujarati rap. Even though rap is used in a very different way as one mixes it with traditional tunes so that the young find those interesting to hum, not all markets in Gujarat find this trend amusing.
Agrees director Haritrushi Purohit who says, One cant use rap haphazardly. The tone of the situation and the song should ideally be suitable for using a rap number. Whats interesting about rap is that one can experiment a lot with lyrics and use a lot of nice expressions.
Echoing the same sentiment music director Abhishek Patvari says, Rap is just an idea to take forward the mood of a song. So, we have done lot of experiments in giving the traditional songs like Halo Sambhlo Hey Ji.. a peppy touch that will connect to everyone who listens to Gujarati music.
So here we have a number of peppy songs like Its Time To Party, Chhora Chyo Chyo, A Baka, Yo Yo Dhirubhai et al spinning up peppy numbers with notes of rap interwoven beautifully. Many feel, it is just the beginning.
Says Devang Patel, Be it the Rap Katha or Naughty Boy, rap is supposed to convey lyrics in all its simplicity and use a common language that everybody can relate to. And since rap happens to be the best format suitable for straight forward and well written lyrics, it is getting accepted in the industry in a big way. Not every filmy number can qualify as a rap number though.
Seconds Arvind, who says, There should be a fresh appeal in the rap numbers and it will take some time for rap to tap the younger audience in Gujarat.
With music getting an overhauling, rap definitely seems to be taking the centre stage in Gujarati film songs.
