Ojas Rawal, known for his exceptional acting prowess in both the Gujarati and Hindi entertainment industries, has set the stage abuzz with the first look release of his upcoming film, 'Kanubhai the Great.' In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the actor reveals his perspective on the film and his role.
Ojas shared his profound connection to the character he portrays; he said, "I felt extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to play the character of an extraordinary human being whose work continues to make an impact across the world."
"The film pays homage to Padmashri Kanubhai Tailor, a trailblazer who revolutionised the rights and care of disabled individuals, garnering attention from world leaders such as
Indira Gandhi, Morarji Desai,
Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher.
Ojas delves into his intensive research for the role, expressing his admiration for Kanubhai's remarkable journey."
"Kanubhai's life story is an inspiring narrative of triumph over adversity, battling oppression, corruption, and social stigma. His remarkable achievements include coining the term "divyang" to replace derogatory labels and emphasising that disabled individuals are differently abled. His contributions extended to representing India in the World Disability Conference and the introduction of specially reserved seats for disabled persons in public transportation."
Ojas said, “One can just imagine what a joy it was for the actor within me to meet and study Kanubhai and then essay his character accurately. Initially, when I was approached by my friend and co-actor in this film, Vanrajsinh Sisodiya, for the role, I was concerned about whether or not I would be capable of doing justice to it. Undoubtedly, it was very challenging to imbibe Kanubhai's mannerisms, expressions, and physical limitations. However, that is where the challenge and excitement lie. However, after the film's completion and my subsequent discussions with the post-production team, I am simply elated. I am filled with unrivalled pride that I got a chance to play the role of someone whose contribution to not only India but all of humanity shall always remain immeasurable.”
"As 'Kanubhai the Great' unfolds on the big screen, Ojas Rawal's portrayal is set to honour a man whose contributions, not just to India but to all of humanity, are immeasurable. Written and directed by Irshad Dalal and produced by Mahendrasinh J Parmar, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 1, 2023, commemorating the UN's International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3. The actor signed off the conversation."
