Actor Sanjay Dutt has been granted a 14-day extension of his leave of furlough by the state prisons department in Pune. Dutt, who is serving a 42-month sentence after his conviction for illegal possession of arms in the Mumbai blasts case, had left the Yerawada Central Prison on October 1 after securing 14 days’ leave of furlough. “Dutt had sought further extension of furlough on medical grounds immediately after his release, which was considered after examining his medical certificate and after receiving a positive report from the Mumbai police,” said Rajendra Dhamne, DIG of prisons (western region).
Dhamne said that Dutt’s furlough was extended by two weeks from October 16. Furlough excludes the period of travel, which means Dutt is required to surrender at the jail on October 30, after his leave period ends the previous day.Dhamne did not specify the medical reasons mentioned by Dutt in his plea for seeking extension of his leave. “Ninety per cent inmates seek extension of leave of furlough on medical grounds. We’ve extended Dutt’s leave after seeking a no objection report from the Mumbai police,” he said.
