MUMBAI: Film maker Vijay Anand''s resignation as chief of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over screening of adult films was "unjustified", since segregating films as X-rated was not a feasible proposition, Kannada film-maker Girish Kasaravalli has said.
"I don''t agree with Vijay-- first to raise the issue and then quit", Kasaravalli told reporters here on Monday on the sidelines of ongoing Asian Film Festival.
He said it was not easy to segregate films as being X-rated or otherwise.
This could have an adverse effect on mainstream cinema as had been the experience in Japan, said Kasaravalli, whose national award-winning film Dweepa features in the festival.
He disagreed with the notion that Indian film makers have not been able to make a mark at the international level.
He said while they were of high quality, the fault lay with the promotion of the films.
"The real problem is with the promotion of films... Look at the type of efforts made by government agencies in China and Iran to promote the films across the globe. We are far behind," he said.
However, in Karnataka, the existence of several "subsidy schemes" for film makers had helped boost off-beat movies, he said.
"After getting the national award for Dweepa, we were granted Rs 25 lakh... this is quite a big amount," he remarked.
