After exploring the family dramas and tickling his audience's funny bone, filmmaker Nikhil Advani has set out to capture the child in each of us, by way of Delhi Safari, an animation flick that set to hit the theatres soon. Talking about the huge gamble that Advani has taken by venturing into the animation arena, not to mention a 3D film, he says, "Animation films today speak to the child in each of us.
For instance,
Toy Story was not just about a toy, it was about insecurity, which is one of our base emotions. Similarly,
Wall-E got nominated in the Oscars in the category of the best Feature film, mind you, not the best animation film."
"Likewise,
Delhi Safari talks about animal and water conservation. Here is this group of animals and they decide to approach the Parliament because they are convinced that a group of people who take decisions for the country will surely be able to help them out of their dilemma. The film is about the adventures they have on their way there. For instance, they pass a through a sanctuary where they meet a tiger disguising himself as a cat because its afraid that if it comes out as a tiger people will kill him. So you see, the film addresses the issue of conservation. And how can that be only a subject for children?
Arre, when conservationist Bittu Sehgal saw my film, he had tears in his eyes. He told me, 'Nikhil, what I have been trying to tell the world for the past 20 years, you have managed in 120 minutes!' Yes, I am looking at the commercial angle, but frankly, there is a larger issue at stake here."
Talking about 3D, Advani agrees that no great strides have been taken in the field in India. That is because so far no good work has actually been done in the field of 3D animation, he feels. But at the same time, he hopes that with
Delhi Safari the scope for true professionals in the field of 3D will be enlarged.
