Director Jagmohan Mundhra passed away on Sunday morning leaving the industry in a state of shock. Born on October 29, 1948, the director breathed his last in a hospital in Mumbai. Sources close to the director says he was admitted to the hospital recently and was suffering from internal bleeding. The director, who shot to fame with movies like Nandita Das’ “Bawandar” and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s “Provoked”, was all set to begin shooting “Kissa Kutte Ka” by the end of this month.
This film was supposed to be based on a real life story of a dalit woman in Madhya Pradesh. The plot revolved around a real-life case of a Rajput man who owned a dog. When a Dalit woman was seen feeding this dog, it created an uproar in the village. Subsequently, the dog’s owner sued the woman. The village council sided with the man and the woman was ordered to pay the dog’s owner Rs 15,000 as compensation for “polluting” the dog’s status. The dog became a Dalit and was adopted by a Dalit political party and went on to become the symbol of the party. Mundhra’s film, which had an ensemble cast that was shortlisted from applications sent to a newly launched web portal, used this incident as a springboard of sorts. Apart from newcomers, the cast also included Raghuvir Yadav, Seema Biswas and Tannishtha Chatterjee. Days before his death, the director had also rehearsed with his actors for this movie.
