Nandita Das, Actress, On what the world of cinema means to her.
Are you looking forward to the release of your next movie, Bas Yun Hi?
I have a lot of things coming up.
I am going to New Jersey, Boston, and Chicago to talk on women and violence in reference to cinema. But, honestly, what is consuming me at this point of time is a play titled Another Frankenstein, which I am doing with Shabana Azmi, Zohra Sehgal, a Delhi-based theatre personality and an Australian lady. The play is inspired by the book The Secret Diaries of Ann Frank. The play will be performed at Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.
Coming back to Bas Yun Hi, you don''t seem to be too excited.
I prefer to forget the few films I have done because I am never satisfied with the finished product. I look at everything as a learning experience. I am not afraid of failure.
What kind of films appeal to you?
I want to do films I can relate to, films which have something to say, films which I believe in. I have just signed up for an Israeli film directed by the LA-based director, Abinasher. Shooting will begin in January and Parveen Dabbas will act opposite me.
How well have you adapted to the film industry?
I like my work, like meeting different kinds of people, like listening to different kinds of stories. But I don''t connect to the other side. One has to market oneself personally. But there is a certain superficiality attached to this and I am uncomfortable with it.
After denouncing commercial films, you went ahead and did Pitaah and Aks. Even Bas Yun Hi is a commercial film.
I have never denounced any genre. For me, cinema comprises all kinds of films, all languages and all genres.
