Goa is playing host to the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), from today, November 20 to November 28. With 180 international films from 81 countries and a special segment on Goan Films, celebrating local talent and culture, the cinematic extravaganza is set to enthral the delegates. Ishaan Khattar and Sunny Kaushal will perform at the opening ceremony, which will be hosted by Bhumi Pednekar and Abhishek Banerjee.
‘Film festivals must celebrate independent filmmakers’Vani Tripathi Tikoo, the convenor of the steering committee of the international section, spoke about the importance of supporting independent filmmakers at film festivals. She said, “Film festivals are nurturing grounds for attendees and aspiring filmmakers. While we are all champions of Indian cinema, it is independent filmmakers who create films through their own efforts and resources. That is what film festivals must celebrate.” Discussing how
Shekhar Kapur, as the festival director, has shaped this year’s edition, she adds, “He is a global filmmaker who has brought a filmmaker’s perspective to the festival. This is reflected in the lineup, screenings, and the relevant conversations that form part of this year’s programme.”
Cannes, Venice, Berlin film festival winners to be screenedOver the years, IFFI has consistently made efforts to ensure that cinephiles get to watch the best of Indian and global cinema at the festival. This year, in continuation of its tradition, the festival’s screening programme has a wide range of films. Talking about their efforts, Prithul Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said, “The 55th IFFI showcases some of the best films from around the world, including those that have received widespread global acclaim. The teams have worked tirelessly to bring the best of cinema to festival audiences, presenting titles such as The Room Next Door (Golden Lion at Venice), Dahomey (Berlin Golden Bear winner), Toxic (Golden Leopard winner at Locarno), and All We Imagine as Light (Grand Prix winner at Cannes). We are proud that this year’s selection also reflects gender balance, featuring films by 47 women filmmakers and no fewer than 66 debut filmmakers whose works will be showcased at the festival.”
