‘I’m not God: Prosenjit

The respect that he gets has been earned over the years. Flaunting a full kitty with fame, money and family, Tollywood’s badshah, Prosenjit Chatterjee, tells Ruman Ganguly what’s more on his wishlist.

Prosenjit Chatterjee. (TOI Photo)You are excelling with each passing day. Is it taxing to hold on to the number one slot?
Its like whenever the master blaster, Sachin Tendulkar, comes on the field, people expect him to make a century. Honestly, I dont think Im the best. As an actor, Im still waiting for the right opportunity to come my way so that I can prove my acting prowess.
1x1 polls
I am a player who likes scoring for the team. For me, the entire project has to fare well. Finally, it all boils down to earning a good revenue. And when a film is a dud at the BO, I try to carefully assess what went wrong.
You are placed on a pedestal by Tollywood. How does it feel to have a larger than life image?
Im not God and I dont want to be treated as one. Whenever I reach the sets, there is pin drop silence. This springs from respect and not fear. I guess you earn it over the years.
Being a workaholic, do you face Monday blues?
No (laughs)!
What about Friday jitters?
Not really. Khela, Ghar- Jamai, Rajkumar, Shivaji all these films are ready for release. I know that commercial films, which the media rate as bad, fare well at the BO. But I really look forward to the reviews of films like Khela, Swapner Din...
Swapan Sahas Golmaal is a multi-starrer. Whats your role like?
After a long time Tollywood will see a light-hearted romantic comedy. In this movie Jisshu, Tota and me share equal screen space. I play a short-tempered guy who has suddenly earned a lot of money starting from scratch. Its good that Tollywood too is digressing from a solo lead movie.

How much of an angry man is Prosenjit in real life?
I used to be so seven to eight years back but with time, I have learnt to control my temper.
And does it suit your temperament to venture into small screen like most Bollywood stars?
I might in the near future. But it has to be a non-fiction programme. I feel that the winners of the
reality shows arent properly placed. I will surely try to make them a part of the industry.
Going by the industry rumours, there was a time when you were linked to every other heroine. The rumour mills seem to have gone mum all of a sudden...
I think the media is loaded with work now and doesnt have the time to ponder on this
issue (laughs).
Coming to the item issue, would you do an item number considering the fact that SRK has done an item number in Krazzy 4?
Debasree and I did an item number for Prabhat Roys film, long time back. The banner, the rapport that I share with the director and the producer matter before I agree to do such numbers.
You are considered the reigning king of Tollywood. Would you get a similar treatment in Bollywood?
How can I answer that sitting in Tollywood?
You work 24X7. Is there a difference between a good bread earner and a doting husband? Which would be your category?
A good bread earner. Im a very bad husband as I dont spend time with my family.
Is Prosenjit, the star different from Prosenjit, the real man?
Yes. When I apply make-up, Im a different person altogether. I cut myself off from the world and concentrate on my acting. At that point, Prosenjit, the actor becomes selfish. But in real life, Im far from the word selfish.
Fame, money, family, Prosenjit has it all. Whats more on the wishlist?
I am looking for some different kind of fame Im known as an actor but I might also want to be known as a director nationally, internationally!
Finally, did you wish Sourav Ganguly after he won the Sera Bangali award?
No, I didnt but I wished him after his mind blowing performance at the last IPL match at Eden Gardens.
