doweshowbellyad=0; An exclusive picture from The Last Lear Low on time-tested masala, high on twists and turns that play with your mind, and still wholesome entertainment thats the kind of intelli-cinema which is drawing the audience to theatre these days. Not that the big, fat Bollywood formula is dead, but smart cinema is thriving alongside it these days.
A case in point is
Mithya, the Rajat Kapoor film that has earned both moolah and critical acclaim. The lead actress of the film, Neha Dhupia, is very kicked with this new development. Intelligent cinema is ruling the roost. I believe that cinema is just a reflection of our society. As the society gets smarter, more focused and opens up, the film industry is getting more experimental. Intelligent cinema, with a dash of humour is how I will define the trend. The fact that this kind of cinema is earning money obviously helps, she says. With films like Bheja Fry, Mithya and Khosla ka Ghosla heralding this trend, the filmmakers and producers are getting more daring and experimentative. Arindam Chaudhuri of Planman Motion Pictures, which also produced Mithya, says, Intelligent cinema is also high on commercial viability. A good script wins over everything else. Film viewing dynamics have changed and it is time to cash on it.The next film they are coming out with is The Last Lear, which stars bankable names like Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal, but the script remains the films hero. Arindam explains, We make films that have a mind and are liked by the masses too. And we cover the risks through our detailed market analysis. For instance, while making a film like The Last Lear, we cant assume that it will appeal to the sensibilities of everybody. The film may have Amitabh Bachchan, but it is in English and talks about Shakespearean ideas. However, I am confident about it for it is a good script and is backed by concrete marketing.Ranvir Sheorey, who is synonymous with quality cinema, puts it thus, A good film will always be appreciated. Period. He goes on to add, I dont feel that audience reaction depends on whether it is a multi-starrer or not, it depends on the script and the approach towards the film. It is a great idea to experiment and serve people with intelligent fare. Films like Mithya, Bheja Fry etc. have worked in the past and I am sure other good films in the future will do so too.
