Imran Khan might be all earnestness in giving a Pankaj Udhas-esque rendition of the song “Nakkadwalley Disco” in “Delhi Belly”, but given the fragile egos of those getting hurt by the filmi duniya these days, here’s another one to have been shattered by Imran’s mock ghazal gaayaki. Karol Bagh is hurt, and how! The song has Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor singing a ‘ghazal’ on stage, with a backdrop that says, ‘Karol Bagh Cultural Association presents nakkadwale disco, udhaarwale khisko’.
Clearly, it hasn’t gone down well with the real Karol Bagh Association, as the filmmakers have not ‘taken their permission’ to use Karol Bagh in the song! Sandeep Khandelwal, president, Karol Bagh Association and Delhi Hotels and Restaurant Owners Association, says, “There is no association called the Karol Bagh Cultural Association, but yes, we do organise cultural programs. They are using our name to create some fake association.
But isn’t the song promoting Karol Bagh? “What promotion? Karol Bagh waise hi itna famous hai. In fact, unhone jaan ke Karol Bagh use kiya hai, taaki log dekhein ki kya gaana hai. They have used it for publicity,” says Khandelwal. So, what are they angry about? “Firstly, we oppose the fake name. They can’t use Karol Bagh’s name and create any association. Secondly, they didn’t ask for our permission, aise hi hamari locality ka naam kaise use kar sakte hain bina bataye? Thirdly, the song is cheap. Just listen to the way they say “puncture”, it is so vulgar. And finally, the song says ‘nakkadwale disco, udhaarwale khisko’, hamara toh saara dhanda hi udhaar pe chalta hai. People might think ki Karol Bagh waale keh rahe hain, udhaarwale khisko,” he explains.
Very well then, are they planning to take any action against the filmmakers? “We will be taking legal action against them. But we will have a meeting first and then we will decide how to go about it.” Sorry Karol Bagh, looks like your ‘good name’ has just been ‘pentured’, eh?
