Upset over actor Kamal Hasan’s decision to release his film Vishwaroopam on DTH platform on January 10, a day before its theatrical release, exhibitors and multiplexes are likely to not screen the film. Vice-president of Cinema Owners Association of India, Nitin Datar said, “Kamal Haasan is trying to set a precedent which is only going to kill theatre business.
Producers should not be selfish and think only about their security but also look at what benefits the business of cinema.’’
Theatre owners and distributors are not convinced that DTH is video piracy proof and believe the showing will drastically cut ticket revenues. Not only single screens even multiplexes are likely to not screen the film.
South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce has been trying to convince Hasan to push the DTH release post the film hits the cinema halls. Producer L Suresh said, “we have been trying to convince him but he told us that the deal has been done and nothing can be done. I guess now, theatre will not cooperate and may not screen his film.’’
