R Madhavan opens up about meeting wife Sarita Birje when she was his student: ‘She found my teaching interesting’
Long before he became one of the most recognisable faces in Indian cinema, R. Madhavan was teaching public speaking and communication skills in Kolhapur. It was there that he first met his future wife, Sarita Birje — not at a film event or party, but inside a classroom.
In a recent interaction with Mashable India, Madhavan revisited the early days of their association. Sarita had accompanied her cousin, who was enrolled in his course, and decided to sit in on the sessions.
“I was in Kolhapur. She used to be my student. She had come to Kolhapur to meet her cousin, who was enrolled in my classes. She decided to accompany her cousin to my classes and found my teaching interesting,” he shared.
It was only after she completed the course and moved on with her career — eventually becoming an air hostess — that the equation changed. As a thank-you gesture, Sarita invited him out for dinner.
Recalling that turning point, Madhavan said with a smile, “We went to a hotel in Kolhapur for dinner, and since then... she has been treating me.”
Years later, even as Madhavan transitioned from being the industry’s chocolate boy to a versatile performer across films and OTT platforms, their personal life remained largely private and steady.

No romance during the teacher-student phase
Madhavan clarified that while Sarita did attend his classes, there was no romantic angle during that time. Their interaction remained limited to the classroom, with clear boundaries maintained. It was only after she completed the course and moved on with her career — eventually becoming an air hostess — that the equation changed.
