Even today? "Earlier, my first reaction on being told I was beautiful was: is that so? I''m good-looking but my looks have been given to me by God.
I''m not vain about my looks. I try to eat right and believe that if a person is happy inside, this reflects externally."

Hema has many reasons to be happy -- she has a promising career in politics, her biography has been released, and her daughter Esha Deol has found success on the silver screen. "She looks beautiful in Dhoom. People ask me about her outfits in the film; she is a modern-day girl and will dress up like girls her age do. During my days as an actress, my mother asked me to wear only Kanjeevaram saris, but both she and I changed with time. Today, I even wear spaghetti straps with saris."

For Hema, her proudest moment is seeing her daughters Esha and Ahana perform at dance festivals. "It''s a divine feeling when all three of us are together on stage. I''d love to do a mother-daughter film with Esha but the right script is needed first."

Currently busy with a daily soap, Hema has another film opposite Amitabh Bachchan coming up. Besides, there could be "a very big political announcement" soon. "I''ve led a very rich life and have begun my journey as a politician. Being in Parliament is a wonderful feeling. I love interacting with people. Even today, when I go to villages, people call me Basanti. They don''t know me as Hema Malini."
