Songs have a retro feel, television ads are inspired by classics and there seems to be nostalgia about a time when high hair buns and wide collars made a definitive fashion statement.

So there you have black and white ads selling everything from TV channels to chocolate, songs with singular R D Burman or Saigal overtones and the retro look making a big comeback in fashion.

Does that mean we are wishing for yesterday once more?

Naeem Khan, managing director, The Lead, says, "Humour has taken centre stage in advertising these days, and retro provides this essential element. Advertising agencies have started experimenting with the retro style to gain visibility and to differentiate one brand from the other."

Forget ads, even songs seem to follow the strategy that old is gold. Take pubs and discos, for instance. Stayin'' Alive comes blaring out along with saiyyas and balmas. Says Nitesh Ahuja, DJ and sound engineer, "There is a lack of creativity, so producers are looking for some quick fixes. They are picking up old melodies and improvising by adding new beats to it." Pubs play a lot of remixes because that''s what people want to dance to, he adds.

And there is retro-spection even in fashion. Says fashion designer Shikha Verma, "The retro look is in this season. Bright bold colours, psychedelic prints, floral motifs and geometric prints have come back." Remixes have done a good job of highlighting them too, she says. "Look at the kurtis in Babu chel chabila. There are bold floral prints which have now made a comeback."

So this is the time to disco, definitely. Just take a look at movies — from Kal Ho Naa Ho to Main Hoon Na — costumes and songs are seeped in that retro look. Let''s get set for that 60s show, once again.

<formid=367815></formid=367815>
