Chandraprakash Dwivedi, actor, film director and screenwriter, is best known for directing the 1991 television epic Chanakya in which he also played the title role of the political strategist. Now, at the upcoming Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya, his abridged version of Ram Charit Manas is being played live, featuring Sakshi Tanwar and Anup Jalota. He talks to ETimes about the same...Are you going to Ayodhya for the consecration of Ram Lalla?My wife, daughter and I have been invited. In 1996, I was of the opinion that only a temple should be made here. Somebody said national monument. My answer to that was, “Ram Temple would be the national monument.” So, the temple is the national monument of the country. I never had any doubts about that.
You also made a documentary on the struggle for the temple...Yes I made a 12-minute film when the donation drive had started, which encapsulates the history of struggle for the temple. The volunteers used to show the film everywhere they went to collect donations.
You have now made a five part series chaupar ka swar-- shri ram gathan with Sakshi Tanwar, Anup Jalota and many more singers... To commemorate the consecration at the temple, Doordarshan had commissioned us to do something last minute. So, what we have done is that we have made an abridged version of the Ram Charit Manas in five parts. This version has been sung by Anup Jalota, Shekhar Singh, Mahalakshmi Iyer,
Sanjeev Abhyankar, and Priyanka Barve and anchored by Sakshi Tanwar. It is live from Ayodhya. I served as the creative consultant and my wife Mandira Kashyap has directed it.
