When Mumtaz didn't leave her husband despite him cheating, she also ended up having an extra-marital affair: 'I was feeling lonely, but it was temporary'
Mumtaz who is known for a number of movies like 'Aap Ki Kasam', 'Do Raaste', 'Loafer', 'Roti', 'Saccha Jutha' amidst others. The actress is also loved for her candidness off screen and how honest, upfront she is while talking about her life and co-stars. Mumtaz has spoken about her relationship with Shammi Kapoor in several interviews. She confessed that Shammi had proposed to her but she did not accept his proposal as the women in the Kapoor house were not allowed to act. She would have lost out on her career. The actress later married businessman Mayur Madhvani.
In an old chat with ETimes, Mumtaz had admitted that she got married because she believed that every woman should marry at a certain time and she just seized that moment. She said, "Several heroines of that time didn’t get married. They’re still single. I found a good man who loved me, so I chucked it all. I was fed up of films.” Her in-laws didn't want her to work after marriage and she was the highest paid actresses that time. "
Mumtaz admitted that her in-laws didn’t want her to work, and she accepted their wishes despite being among the highest-paid actors at that time. She said, "At the time of my marriage, the Madhvani family said that I couldn’t continue working. So I quit my job and got married at a time when I was the highest-paid actress. Who else charged Rs 7.5 lakh per film? Yet, when they said I can’t work anymore, I left the job. My family members were not selfish people who kept pushing me to keep working to bring in more money. I actually respect my family for letting go of a girl who was making crores at that time."
However, not everything was great in her marriage. The actress admitted that her husband cheated on her but she did not leave him. "I was not going to give up a marriage because of a stray incident. My husband is not a flirt; he’s a good-looking man. He made a mistake. Rather than dumping him, I chose to be by his side.”
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Mumtaz had further spoken about it and said, "It’s quite common for men to have affairs discreetly. My husband had only one.” She revealed that her husband had confessed to liking a girl in the US but had assured her that he would never leave her. “I respect him for being honest with me,” she said.
She also admitted that due to her husband's infidelity, she was deeply hurt and came to Mumbai. That's when she also met someone and had a brief affair which didn't last very long. She confessed, "After the episode, I began feeling lonely. Main thodi rubabwali thi. I felt hurt. So, I flew down to India. When you’re amidst thorns and someone comes along with a rose, you do get carried away. But it was nothing serious. Just a temporary phase, which ended soon.”
