Known for her elegance and charisma, the actress also garnered acclaim for her exceptional versatility, which continues to inspire generations. One of her notable collaborations was with celebrated filmmaker Shyam Benegal for the 1981 film Kalyug, a project that showed her depth as a performer.


In a previous interview with O2 Studio, Shyam recalled being awestruck by Rekha's talent, particularly her photographic memory. He revealed that she could memorise dialogues effortlessly, even after hearing them just once, a trait that amazed everyone on set.

The filmmaker admitted that his decision to cast Rekha in Kalyug surprised many, as he was known for working with non-star actors. However, her exceptional skills convinced him that she was perfect for the role. Benegal shared an incident during the dubbing of the film, where Rekha arrived late, much to his frustration. Yet, within 20 minutes, she completed all her lines flawlessly, saving the team days of scheduled work.

This showed Rekha’s extraordinary abilities, transforming Shyam Benegal’s initial anger into admiration. The director noted that her dedication and brilliance were what truly set her apart, beyond her glamorous image.

The year 1981 was particularly pivotal for Rekha. Apart from Kalyug, she delivered a career-defining performance in Umrao Jaan, which earned her the National Award for Best Actress. Together, these films showcased her range and established her as one of India’s finest actors.
