His partner Surendra (Raam of the duo) passed away soon after they signed the film Agent Vinod in 1976. However, Vijay continued to use his partner’s name in all his future works in his honour. His son, Amar said, "I will remember him as a loving and an extremely affectionate father. He taught me to be humble and work hard. As a music composer, he has left behind a rich legacy. He knew the pulse of the audience, and filmmakers who he worked with knew exactly how to tap his talent and get the best out of him."

He has also given music for several Marathi and Bhojpuri films. Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar expressed her grief on Twitter by saying that she is very sad to hear about his demise. She added that he was a good human being. Renuka Shahane too fondly remembered the late composer. Salman Khan too mourned his loss.
