Abheri is a raga that has been often used in film music, even at the early stages of Tamil cinema. One of the most popular compositions in Carnatic music, though, is the unforgettable Nagumo... by Thyagaraja. The melakarta raga for this is Kharakarapriya. In film music, it’s been used mostly in romantic numbers.
The melodious Kana Kandeanadi... from Parthiban Kanavu is said to be based on this raga.
The Mozart of Madras, A R Rahman, has also been instrumental in making this raga popular. One of the songs he used it in, the Kannodu Kanbadellam... number in Shankar’s Jeans, caught on big time and catapulted the singer (Nithyasree) to greater heights.
Bhimplas, a popular raga in Hindustani music, is said to have a lot of similarities with this raga. A lot of thukdas (small musical segments that are normally sung at the end of a concert) have been composed in Abheri and have been appreciated by music lovers.
