The melodious track, 'Tum Pukar Lo' ('Khamoshi', 1969), left an indelible mark on the mind of singer-composer Dabboo Malik ever since he heard it. Now, in a bid to pay a heartfelt tribute to his favourite singer Hemant Kumar and lyricists Gulzar and Kaifi Azmi ('Yeh Nayan Dare Dare'), Dabboo recently released a song that’s a beautiful blend of both these numbers.
In a candid chat with BT he talks about his indie songs, upcoming concerts and more...
Tell us about your latest single…I have always been a great fan of yesteryear’s music. I feel that those songs should be brought back in a reinvented, but pure form. 'Tum Pukar Lo' is the first step in my journey towards creating independent songs and embarking on live concerts. Mika Singh and his banner MS Sound released it worldwide and the video was directed by Roshaan Garry.
Like most artistes, you too, have experienced a low phase in your career. How did you deal with it?My loneliness and difficult times always helped me make more music. But when I discovered talent in my sons (Amaal and Armaan), I realised that it was time to nurture them.
Do your sons encourage you in your musical journey? They are eager that I bring my talent out — be it singing or composing. I was very reluctant, but my family and close friends pushed me to do this.
You are gearing up for a live concert. Tell us a bit about it...With the Dabboo Malik Live concert, I want to pay tribute to legends like my farther Sardar Malik, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan and my favourite lyricists. I want to recreate my dad’s magic with his songs like 'Saranga Teri Yaad Mein' and 'Haan Deewana Hoon Main'.
