Just before he joined the BJP in Delhi last week, Kumar Sanu had told us that he had “no interest in politics”! When we’d caught up with him during his sudden visit to the capital, he’d told us he was here to meet “someone in the political circle,” without elaborating further. “Yes it’s almost after a year that I have come to Delhi,” he’d said. “I’ve just come back from London after meeting my family and decided to stop in Delhi for personal reasons before flying back to Mumbai.”In fact, when we’d asked him if he was planning to join politics, Sanu had said, “Frankly, I have no interest in politics.
Aur yeh baat pakkihai that I will never contest elections as I don’t want to become a minister. I’m planning to build a primary school for orphans in West Bengal and I was here for some discussions regarding the same. The meeting went off very well and the project will start next month.” So much for that disinterest!
About his plans to start the primary school, he said, “For the past 26 years, I have entertained the audience with my performances, and now I’ve decided to do something good for the people. This project is like a dream for me and my idea is to promote education in remote villages.”
Talking about Bollywood artists joining politics, Sanu said, “I think that it’s entirely their personal choice to enter politics or not, and I have nothing to say about it. If they are capable of taking up the responsibilities of politics, then that’s good, otherwise they shouldn’t enter politics.”
He is also planning to make his debut as an actor in a Bollywood movie.
He tells us, “Acting is not new to me – I have acted in Bengali movies earlier. This will be my first Bollywood movie as an actor. I have already completed shooting for the movie in Rishikesh. Interestingly, my character’s name is Kumar Sanu too and the role is that of a singer. I have also sung a song in the movie.”
Sanu has a daughter named Shannon, who lives in London and has a passion for singing, he told us. “Shannon is turning out to be a good singer. I’m totally amazed at her style of singing,” he said. “She is more inclined towards international music, though.” When we asked him if Shannon would ever be singing in Bollywood movies, he was emphatic she wouldn’t. “No way! I will not allow her to sing in Bollywood movies. I am totally against that idea. I want her to make a place for herself in the international music scenario,” he’d said.
