Catchy hooks, delicious leads, punchy basslines and vocals to down kamikaze shots on — Mumbai-based band Twist To Break Seal puts it all on the line. This quintet holds day jobs and reserves weekends to flirt with music. The band comprises Sagar, Austin, Warren, Pratyush and Aaron. The weekend project derives its name from the urban man's habit of twisting and breaking seals after a week of work in the office.
On their a-ha moment: The band first came into existence when Austin and Pratyush used to work over bizarre deadlines at an ad agency in Mumbai.
Brainstorming sessions turned into jams and before they knew it, they were already working on tunes that were composed by Austin. Along the way, they bumped into Warren, with his trusty drumsticks and Aaron with his plucky bass guitar. Vocalist Sagar is the latest addition to the band.
On their brand of music: If you'd chop up some good ol' classic-rock, drop in some dollops of alt-rock, pepper it with some RHCP-like (
Red Hot Chilli Peppers) vibes and pour it into a glass of catchy melodies, you'd pretty much get what the band's music is like.
Their first album is a mix of over seven songs that have strange back stories. "For instance,
Pink Underwear is about a guy who wears pink underwear and is proud of it. All I Want Is More was inspired by a girl they met at a bar. We won't reveal any more!" grins Sagar.
They do more straight stuff too. Their song Falling talks about rising up against all odds for those who are rooting for you. "It is dedicated to all those who have been with us through thick and thin," says Sagar.
On their influences:
Twist To Break Seal listen to different genres. Sagar's inspirations are
Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam),
Chris Cornell (Audioslave),
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) whereas Pratyush is inspired by
Slash, Xtreme, Tremonti. "Austin listens to pretty much everything from Bollywood to EDM to obscure stuff that we can't even describe. We are really open to all genres. At times, someone yells, 'Let's put some dubstep on those drums' and Warren complies." The members add their own styles to fit into the music. They encourage each one’s inputs for song compositions.
On their way forward: Austin says, "Last year was epic. We've been on TV, radio, done scores for short films, commercials for women empowerment. This year, on the list is the album and meeting more and more people and doing more gigs.
We aspire to do a Bollywood film this year and we are sending that message out into the universe. Yo universe, twist and break some seals for us!"
