Delhi-based band Parikrama has been invited by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to be a part of its entourage, which would be performing in the US in March 2011. Parikrama will be the first Indian band to perform in the US to mark the golden jubilee celebration of John F Kennedy coming to power.Subir Malik, spokesperson and member of the band, has displayed the news announcement, which was made in the US media, on his profile on a social networking website.
The message reads, “For three weeks, beginning in March 2011, a cavalcade of Indian artistes will visit Washington, from the classical Odissi dance of choreographer Madhavi Mudgal to the contemporary rock-and-roll of Parikrama, a band from Delhi. Highlights of the India festival, estimated to cost $7 million, will be the work of choreographers Alarmel Valli, Malavika Sarukkai and Shantala Shivalingappa; music from sitarist Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the legendary
Ravi Shankar, ghazal singer Vatsala Mehra and drummer Sunny Jain; and theatre from writer Ratan Thiyam and puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee.”
Sunil Mehdiratta, director, ICCR, Delhi, said, “Seeing Parikrama’s good reviews, we nominated them to be part of the event.”
