Comedy films have always found favour with audiences who love a good laugh. And filmmaker Shekar PC — the scriptwriter and director of the upcoming film Chaddi Dosth — having observed this trend, says, “Cinema needs to be extremely entertaining. And since comedy is the biggest element of an entertaining film, I decided to blend elements of comedy and emotions in my film.” But Shekar’s film stars two of Kannada cinema’s top comedians — Sadhu Kokila and Rangayana Raghu — as protagonists and chances are that the humour could get lost.
“Comedy can only be the essence and never the primary theme. That said, for
Chaddi Dosth I analyzed Sadhu and Raghu’s acting styles to avoid a clash,” says the director, adding that he has worked around their different acting styles. “While Raghu’s comic timing with dialogues is precise, Sadhu’s body language is hilarious. I decided to etch their characters accordingly, and that helped balance the various elements in the script,” he says
The film, which deals with friendship, is unusual in the sense that it features two middle-aged men in the lead. Won’t this drive away a huge section of the audience? “I don’t think it should,” responds Shekar, adding, “I could have featured a boy and girl as best friends, but the Indian mentality is such that if a film portrays a boy and girl supporting each other through troubled times, audiences tend to wish for them to fall in love or get married. I did not want attention to be diverted from the friendship. As for their ages, I think it’s better to feature middle-aged men because with youngsters, the issue of love would have to be addressed which will again digress from the central theme. As for not exploring the friendship between two girls, I must say that I relate better to men.”
