Former chief minister
HD Kumaraswamy, who popularised the village stay (grama vastavya) during his tenure, is upset with the film December 1. The film which was released last week is about a chief minister staying in the home of an AIDS-affected couple.
The film shows the couple being ostracised in society due to the CM's visit, as their AIDS status was not known to others till then.
It may be recalled that in January 2007, Kumaraswamy had stayed in the hut of a HIV-affected villager.
Criticising the film, Kumaraswamy said that some people have for medacartel to make films only for the sake of awards. Kumaraswamy, who was a film producer himself before turning politician, said that the P Sheshadri directed film is far from the truth and challenged the filmmaker to prove that his village stay had caused any problem to anyone.
If he did so, he would visit the place again and help the affected people. However, he said that the film portrayed village stay in a wrong light and completely opposite to the intention with which it was done. He also said that he was contemplating taking legal action against Sheshadri.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, P Sheshadri, said, “Kumaraswamy comes from the film industry and I regret his statements about December 1.No one says commercial films that he made as producer was for making money. Let him ban state film awards, but I will continue to make such films. The film is based on the village stay concept, which he may have started, but many other chief ministers followed. I researched for the film and unlike a reporter, made a film out of it rather than a news story or documentary. His website has all the details of villages he visited and he can check what has happened after his visit. If they are better off, he can put that upon his website. But, this film is my imagination and I have made no reference to him or his party. Many things can happen in a village stay that do not come to the notice of the CM and that is what I have shown in the film but it is not about Kumaraswamy. If he goes to court, I am ready to answer him there.”
The film that was released last weekand earlier this month won two National Film Awards for the Best Regional Language film in Kannada and the Best Original Screenplay.
