When the unassuming Jai made his debut in tinsel town as the brother of Ilayathalapathy Vijay in Bhagavathi, not many thought that he would soon rise to be a star and set temperatures soaring. Yes, Jai has arrived as a hero and how! 'I struggled a lot for Bhagavathi and since it was my first film, I was really apprehensive. The only aim was to earn a good name,' starts off Jai on a nostalgic note.
And he did get a good name with his sheer dedication and hard work.
Be it Chennai 600028, Subramaniapuram or Vaamanan, Jai has managed to make a mark. His latest film to hit the screens is Adhe Neram Adhe Idam (ANAI), and the actor just can't stop talking about it. 'ANAI is a commercial pot-boiler. It has comedy, action, romance and friendship. I play a youngster who is searching for a job,' says he.
In ANAI, Jai shares screen space with Vijayalakshmi for the second time. 'Although we didn't act as a pair in Chennai 600028, the comfort level was high in ANAI. That's quite evident from our sizzling chemistry onscreen. Vijayalakshmi has improved from her Chennai 600028 days. Her confidence level has increased by leaps and bounds.'
With his yet-to be-released Aval Peyar Tamilarasi (AVT) being selected to be screened at film festivals, Jai surely seems to be going places. 'When Meera Kathiravan signed me for the film, he had immense confidence in the script. Frankly speaking, when I signed Subramaniapuram, I didn't expect the film to become such a massive hit. But when I signed AVT, I had a gut feeling that the film would go places,' says the actor who is currently busy with Goa and
Arjunan Kadhali.
If there is one thing that brings an instant smile to Jai's face, it's the mention of his resemblance to Vijay. 'Guess what? Some of my friends call me Little Thalapathy. That's something I'm proud of. But Vijay advised me that if I wanted to be a hero, I shouldn't resemble another actor. He asked me to develop my own style and I have been following his advice till date. I make sure that I don't follow his mannerisms. If I am a hero today, he is one of the reasons. He has asked me to emerge as his competitor,' says the actor with a smile.
Jai's interview is never complete without the mention of Ajith. 'Yes, he is the one who charges me up. If I am down, I call him up and my worries vanish in a second. I feel great that two top-rung heroes care for me,' beams the actor.
Finally, quiz Jai if he'll get back to his first love, music direction, and this is what he has to say. 'Let me do as many good films as possible. The day people say I am a good actor, I will start composing.'
