Make way for film buffs
The biggest plus for Biffes has been the crowds it has been able to draw.Considering that as recently as five years ago, films were screened to near empty auditoria, it was heartening to note the thousands that thronged Central College for the inauguration of the BIFFES.
Having put out a notice that everyone with a delegate badge was welcome to the inauguration,it turned out to be a big surprise when the police force that ruled the day (thanks to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's presence) refused entry to those with delegate badges, insisting on an invitation.
1x1 polls
This is all happening because of the CM and other politicians, I wish we could keep these people out, they are the ones that don't care about good cinema in the first place, said a prominent writer (who doesn't want to be named),who along with several others was stuck on the pavement outside the main gates.
Keeping the politicos out of the show is an improbability given that BIFFES is a government driven and funded initiative. There was some good cheer when a policeman informed the crowd that the lal battis (the official cars) would leave soon and then they would be allowed to enter.Who wants to see the politicians and the film stars anyway,we have come to watch the movie, said the writer, resulting in loud laughter and good cheer among those braving the cold and waiting on the roads. The inauguration, needless to say was delayed with the lighting of the ceremonial lamps and the speeches taking up more than their allotted time.
The BIFFES has become a completely tech savvy organization with regular Facebook and Twitter updates helping fans keep abreast of what is happening. They even apologized to the teeming crowds that were denied entry on FB,stating that the BIFFES team was subjected to the same harassment by the cops. All we can say is that the opening film Bekas seems to have assuaged the anger of those that managed to enter the screening. The BIFFES will perhaps choose a bigger venue for the opening screening next year,or simply keep the ceremony private Time will tell, for now its back to the world of films.
