Bangalore Times had earlier reported that a lack of adequate number of members in the regional censor board was hampering film certification of Kannada films. In the time since, filmmakers who were looking at this window to release their films had been relying on the board in Mumbai to do the needful. But following the recent arrest of the CEO of the Censor Board, the Mumbai Censor Board has stated that it would not certify films from other regions.
The news comes at a time when the makers of
Puneeth Rajkumar’s Power*** were hoping to certify the film in Mumbai and release the film this week. Sources say that the move could derail the film’s release plans, but producer Praveen Kolla differs. Praveen says, “We are 100% confident that the film will release this week. Mumbai might not be able to certify films, but I’ve heard that new members will be appointment at the regional board this week. As promised, we will stick to our release date.”
Puneeth adds, “While the modalities of the film are being worked out by my producers, I am focussed on the release of Power ***. It is my latest offering for my fans and we’ve put our heart and soul into it to make it an entertainer. I hope it will be received just as well.”
Sandalwood films have had trouble getting censored, with 92 of the 99 members’ term lapsing, and no women members among the few left. While regional Censor Board chief M Nagendra Swamy got many films censored in Mumbai, the arrest of the CEO of the Censor Board by the CBI has Mumbai closing its doors on regional film censoring. “I had written to the Information Department, asking them to reinstate a few members as a temporary solution until new members are appointed. It has been a week now. There has been news that around 70 members will be appointed soon, so, I’m hoping we can get back on track to censor Kannada films,” he says.
