Chowdiah Memorial Hall was an apt venue for the 24th edition of the Times of India Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival that was held on January 14. For violin maestro Dr L Subramaniam, playing at the only violin-shaped auditorium in the world made the memorial concert (that is held annually in memory of his father, legendary violinist V Lakshminarayana) all the more special.
He was joined onstage by
sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. The show ran to a packed house, so much so that some members of the audience who couldn’t find seats were welcomed to sit onstage. The violin master noted that even his wife, singer and artistic director Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, couldn’t find a seat. After their solo performances — the Ustad was accompanied by tabla player Pt Vijay Ghate and L Subramaniam was joined by mridangam artist VV Ramana Murthy and ‘Morsing Samrat’ G Sathya Sai — the two legends came together for over a half-an-hour-long jugalbandi that had the audiences in rapture. Music lovers got to see the warm bond that the two greats share when the evening came to a close, as Ustad revealed that Subramaniam is like a brother to him after they exchanged a knowing hug.
