It was only when Best Kept Secret frontman Behram Siganporia voted in the last elections that he realised that voting is a smooth and organised process. All set to vote this year as well, he says that if we don’t exercise this right, then we cannot point fingers at anyone else but ourselves.
"I’ve only voted once before — in the last elections. One reason I had not voted earlier was because I thought the whole process was cumbersome, unorganised and time consuming.
But when I voted last time, I was mighty pleased and surprised, because everything was very well organised. My first voting experience was a lot of fun. I remember taking a selfie, like everyone does, after voting, to encourage my friends and followers to do the same. A lot of people don’t realise that the system is well organised and that it is actually easy to get a voter ID card and cast their vote, which is important to do, especially of late. We read so much about crimes and scams involving political leaders; we rant about it online, but do nothing. I don’t think we have the right to point a finger at anyone, except ourselves. We are the largest democracy in the world, and if we don’t exercise our right to vote, then we have no right to complain. It is important to make a wise decision; to research the candidate and elect someone who understands what it is like to live in 2018. We need someone who understands pressing issues in both, urban and rural areas. I think the lack of a suitable candidate is a big reason why people in a city like Bengaluru don’t vote in large numbers. Many times, it is choosing the lesser evil when it comes to candidates. Even if you choose the NOTA option, you are making your voice heard. It is small drops that make an ocean — every single vote counts,” he says.
