Actress
Aparna Balamurali recently talked about the body-shaming comments she has faced over the years. The actress also talked about how she learned to overcome them.
In a recent interview, the 'Mirage' actress said that there are a lot of people who are interested in seeing whether she has become fatter or slimmer. She says, "They are also keen to ask, 'What did you do?' But now I am like—I don’t care. It took me a long time to change my mindset."
Aparna says such comments initially affected her confidence
Aparna recalled that initially, such comments deeply affected her confidence. Talking to Saina South Plus, she shared an incident at an airport after a long journey when a stranger casually remarked, ‘Hi, you have become fat.’ Aparna said she was stunned. She stood there, just staring at the person, and walked past him casually without uttering a word.
Aparna on overcoming criticism
The actress explained that handling repeated comments was difficult at first but became easier over time. "When many such things happened, it was very difficult for me at first. But over time, I overcame it—it just became saturated," she added.
Earlier, in 2022, Aparna had told On Manorama, "I was someone who used to get upset when someone said I had put on weight. But now I no longer entertain such comments. I have put on weight owing to health issues and other problems.
There are a lot of people who accept me the way I am."
She highlighted the double standards in the film industry, noting how male actors are celebrated regardless of looks, whereas female actors often face body-shaming. "Just sheer talent! But when it comes to female actors, we are required to adhere to certain body types; if not, we are body shamed and asked if we can play the role of mothers," she remarked.
