Jagan Shaji Kailas, son of director Shaji Kailas, is in the news for his short film titled Bandham. Jagan says, “While the treatment was comical, there is an underlying theme, which is quite serious.” The film is a means to delve deep into the intricacies of making a film. He says, “The protagonist is perpetually trying to write a story. However he is not able to pen it down and goes through a lot of difficulties.”
The shots focus on the main character’s thoughts and relationships which mould his opinions.
Jagan adds, “The protagonist feels an urge to transform the filmmaking style of yesteryears into a new form to suit today’s changing styles. The character broods over writing a script, and finds stories in every object that he sees around him.”
Ask him if he wanted to take up direction following his father’s footsteps, and he says, “Though I liked direction, I was more inclined towards photography.” He says that
Bandham happened when his friends, Fahim Safar, Amit and others, who are professionals, suggested to him some ideas.
He adds, “Most of the team behind the making of the film were professionals. Whatever doubts we had on the various aspects of the film, we asked each other. So I did not seek my dad’s support.”
Jagan adds, “The film was shot over just one night and when I showed the movie to dad, he was completely bowled over.” He adds that the film has Fahim Safar playing the protagonist with the background score by Rajamani. The story and screenplay was written by Amit Mohan Rajeshwari.
Jagan is currently studying in a business school in Kochi and deems studies as his topmost priority. He winds up saying that he might direct two more short films in the near future.
