The death of veteran actress Sukumari, who has worked in more than 2,500 films and 5000 stage shows, came as a big shock for Mollywood. The 74-year-old PadmaShri recipient passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening after battling burns suffered following an accident at her residence. During a condolence meeting of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) held in Kochi, the actors were seen struggling to speak about Sukumari. While the audio launch of Mammootty’s Emmanuel turned out to be a remembrance function for the late actress, the audio launch of yet another Big M, Mohanlal’s next film was cancelled following her demise.
Wasting no time, most of the artistes left for Chennai to pay tribute to their favourite ‘Amma’. Meanwhile, the practice sessions for a mega stage show organised by AMMA, was also cancelled after the news of her sad demise broke out.
In a career spanning more than five decades, Sukumari has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Oriya and Bengali films. Transcending generations, she has shared screen space with almost all the leading actors of M-Town, including Prem Nazir, Sathyan, Adoor Bhasi, Sukumaran, Soman, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Jayaram, Dileep and Prithviraj.
