The sequel to L2 Empuraan, directed by actor and producer
Prithviraj Sukumaran, has been shot at locations that have rarely been explored in regional cinema to enhance its cinematic appeal. One of the key highlights is its filming in the rugged landscapes of New Mexico, near the historic site associated with J Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project. While the film is not shot at the nuclear site itself, the location has contributed to its visual scale, offering a striking backdrop.
The decision to film near this notable site aligns with Prithviraj’s vision of expanding the film’s scope and crafting an intense, visually compelling setting. A source associated with the film shares, “Prithviraj’s choice to shoot near the Oppenheimer site underscores his ambition to explore new frontiers in
Indian cinema. With L2 Empuraan, he aims to go beyond a standard sequel and create an impactful cinematic experience. The location selection alone indicates his commitment to delivering a visually expansive project.”
The site’s historical significance has drawn additional attention, particularly following the success of Oppenheimer, which won seven awards at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The connection has further fuelled curiosity about L2 Empuraan and its approach to storytelling.
Also referred to as L2E, the film is the second instalment in a planned trilogy, following the 2019 Malayalam film Lucifer. With the teaser already released, anticipation is building around its action sequences and narrative. Lucifer, which marked Prithviraj’s directorial debut, was touted to be one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of that year.
