Jayaraj’s Ottaal has created history of sorts. After securing the National and State Awards, the movie has swept this year’s IFFK top honours including the Suvarna Chakoram and the audience poll award. On winning the film festival’s four awards, the director tells us, “Different juries have picked the film and I think that’s because Ottaal conveyed an emotion that appealed to everyone equally.
I think it’s that sincerity of the subject and the emotional element that have been rewarded.”
About winning the audience poll honour, Jayaraj says, “It shows that a good movie could blur the barrier between the commercial films and others. It’s something akin to winning at Cannes and the Oscars.” The director compares his movie to Adoor Gopalakrishnana’s 1978 film Kodiyettam, which ran for 111 days and broke the barrier between the so-called commercial films and others.
