Excerpts:
You recently signed a Telugu movie… Yes, but I’m not allowed to speak much about it right now.
1x1 polls
The reason I took it up is that I felt it offered me scope to experiment, and challenges always give me a kick.
Are you interested in doing a film in Malayalam? Of course! Though I was born and brought up in Mumbai and I am a child of two cultures, Kerala is my janmabhoomi and Mumbai, my karmabhoomi. Whatever I am today I owe it to my roots and so I would love to act in Malayalam. But someone should take the risk and cast me. I think a lot of filmmakers here feel I am not accessible or maybe they are not sure whether I will be able to act. But all it takes is a call and an audition. I am waiting for a bold director who will take that risk.
Are you familiar with Malayalam actors? Do you follow the trends here? Yes, we watch all Malayalam films and are pretty much updated on the new trends in the industry. I am a great fan of Prithviraj. The new actors like Dulquer and Fahadh are doing a fabulous job. I would love to act with all of them.
Do you think your physique is a barrier when it comes to acting in Malayalam? Well, I don’t know what is the criterion to be an actress in Malayalam. But I find several tall and fit actresses among the young crop. Manju Warrier is my all-time favourite and she is so fit! I have always maintained a positive attitude regarding this and never felt my physique to be unsuited for Malayalam cinema.
While actresses from other South industries are making it big in Bollywood, not many from Malayalam do so. What do you think is the reason? I think we should stop segregating actors into Tamilian, Malayali etc. I don’t think actors from Kerala are at a disadvantage in any way. Vidya Balan has made such an impact in Bollywood, and Shobhana has won the National Award. Mohanlal, Mammootty and Prithviraj have all made inroads in Bollywood . The only factor, if any, which is stopping Malayali actresses, is their own complacency. The push to explore new avenues is lacking in many.
