The hometown of father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, yearns for quality films. After Sawaskhed-Ek Gaav (2003) most films which were made in the city either didnt manage to reach the theaters or did not go down well with the audiences. One of the most talked about films made in the city was Mahaguru (2010) a venture of Sanjay Bhutada. It was promoted as the first film of Upendra Limaye after he bagged the National Award.
Shankar Mahadevan had also lent his voice for the numbers. With an elaborate starcast with Kuldeep Pawar Bhargavi and Smita Tambe, the film failed to make a mark. In fact, the print of the movie was inaugurated by Balasaheb Thackerey earlier last year. Limaye also won the Sanskruti Kaladarpan Best Actor award in the Kaladarpan Film Festival in 2011. After such ostentation, it is rumoured to have been shelved. The cast and crew are upset with the producer for not releasing the film. Just because the film is completed and not released doesnt mean that the film is shelved. I am waiting for the right time to release it. I have put my money in the film so I have the right to decide what to do with the film. I dont care if the team is upset, says producer Sanjay Bhatuda. We have lost hopes of watching our efforts on the big screen though, laments Datta Patil, writer.
Saaheb, which was floored at the same time as Mahaguru is treading the same path. Deven Kapadnis, writer and producer of Saaheb reveals, We dont wish to release the film anytime soon as we have made it keeping the film festivals in mind.
As the makers of flicks contemplate release dates, few films fail to woo the audience even after they hit the box office. Even with actors like
Sonalee Kulkarni and Ankush Chaudhary and Pratibimba, films failed to draw audience to the theatres. If sources are to be believed, then the film was over-budget, there were mistakes in distribution and publicity.
A couple of months ago Tuch Khari Gharchi Lakshmi hit the theatres and disappeared within a week.
Sharad Ponkshe who starred in Tuch Khari Gharchi Lakshmi had declared before the release of the film, I did the film only because I was getting paid. It is unimaginable an entire film in one bungalow? To fetch the audience to the theatre you need good script, good locations and good treatment, he says.
Rajiv Firkes Ghulam Begum Badshah is in its last schedule of shoot while Prasad Patki and Amol Jadhavs Apan Yanna Pahilat Ka? will go on the floor in the first week of May.
Ghulam Begum Badshah has already become the talk of the town with Bharat Jadhav, Neha Pendse and Sanjay Narvekar casted in the lead. Firke, writer and director says, The first film of Nashik Vahinisaheb was made by me in the1980s and it was a huge hit. Ghulam Begum Badshah will also click with the audiences. The city based projects which never reached theatres or didnt receive good response from audiences were not made professionally. Making a Marathi film is not an easy job. However, we have good buyers for Marathi cinema now who pay well for satellite rights.
