He’s tackled politics, corruption and myriad other socially relevant issues through his films. And now, veteran filmmaker
Shyam Benegal could be taking up the issue of cleaning of river Ganga through his film “Haryana Brigade”, which is to be shot in Lucknow and other parts of UP including Varanasi and Allahabad this November.
According to sources, Benegal’s bent towards raking up issues of national importance via his films will again be apparent in this film.
Several agitations including the most recent ones for the cause of River Ganga in which an ascetic, Swami Nigamananda, who had been fasting for the cause of the holy river lost his life, has made the director address the issue. Sources say that the film, a satirical comedy, will talk about such problems in a lighthearted manner. At the same time, “Haryana Brigade” will also explore the different agendas people have when they visit holy places like Varanasi.
And while there is the question of national issues being addressed, how can terrorism be far behind. Reportedly, Benegal also plans to include the recent blasts on the ghat that made national headlines, in his film, thereby raising the issue of security.
The star cast is almost decided on Rishi Bhutani and Zoa Morani, reveal sources, adding that
Boman Irani could also play a central character in the film. The project, which was expected to go on the floors in October has been shifted to mid-November in order to fit in Boman’s dates.
Some work on the film has already been done, say sources. The production team, apparently, had done recce of Lucknow and has already visited Residency and Ambedkar Park for possible film locations. Apart from that the team has also conducted some research on Varanasi ghats.
