Even though the film does not even mention the name Mullaperiyar, the growing awareness surrounding the dangers of a possible breakdown of the Mullaperiyar Dam has led to trouble for the film's makers "Dam999 is not a film about the Mullaperiyar Dam. It is about a tragedy that can occur because of any of the 4,000 odd dams, which are on the verge of collapsing, which exist around the world," reveal the makers of Dam999.
But MDMK supporters in Tamil Nadu refuse to buy the argument, and insist that the movie supports Kerala, and not Tamil Nadu, regarding the much-in-the-news Mullaperiyar Dam issue. Incidentally, the group has also allegedly appealed to film associations in Tamil Nadu to ban the movie.
"The movie doesn't even mention the names Mullaperiyar, Kerala or Tamil Nadu anywhere. It has no political or regional leanings. All we want to do is create awareness about the dangers of an old dam," says Syam Kuruppu, CEO of Biz TV, the makers of Dam999. ""Some of the major techinicians of the film are from Tamil Nadu,"" he adds.Protesters turned violent recently, and even tried to burn reels of the film at Prasads Labs, Chennai. They have also announced that they will stop the screening of the movie at theatres in Tamil Nadu. The protesters have apparently even called up theatre owners and threatened them with dire consequences. However, the makers of the movie are of the opinion that the issue has been blown out of proportion thanks to political games. "We plan to meet the media along with Vaico, General Secretary of MDMK, where we will clarify that the movie has no references to either Kerala or Tamil Nadu." Police protection has been promised for the screening of the movie on the scheduled date of its international release November 25, he added.Interestingly, Sohan Roy, the director of the movie, had earlier stated that the Tamil version of the movie, which has been dubbed in several languages, is the best one, and is even better than the Malayalam version. Meanwhile, Syam Kuruppu said that they are also arranging for a private screening for the Chief Minister of Kerala Ommen Chandy, to help clear the issue.
