Maareesan Movie Review: Some cons are simple - find the mark, gain their trust, empty their pockets. But Daya (Fahadh Faasil) picked the wrong old man to fleece, or maybe the right one, depending on how you view vigilante justice served with a side of manipulation.

Fresh from Palayamkottai jail, Daya stumbles upon Velayudham (Vadivelu), who appears to be suffering from Alzheimer's and conveniently mistakes him for his son Kumar. With 25 lakhs beckoning from the old man's bank account, Daya plays along, tolerating tantrums and wrong ATM pins through a meandering first half that tests patience more than it builds suspense. The setup drags, honestly - we watch them traverse highways, hit goats, and fumble with bank cards while the film finds its footing.

Post-interval, Maareesan abandons its con-game pretense for something more provocative - a vigilante thriller that's remarkably blunt about its stance on justice. The film doesn't debate whether pedophiles deserve death; it simply serves it cold. This tonal shift from sluggish setup to moral reckoning is jarring, but at least it finally gives the film a pulse. Whether you find this refreshing or disturbing probably says more about you than the movie.

What works is watching these two broken men circle each other. Daya, a thief discovering ethics he didn't know he had, finding in Velayudham the father he never had. Velayudham, channeling his grief into cold revenge. Neither man is virtuous, both are oddly sympathetic. The film grazes these grey areas without really digging in - does tragedy justify becoming judge and executioner? Can a thief lecture anyone about morality?

Vadivelu continues his good act from Maamannan and deserves credit for smartly pivoting from his comedy comfort zone ever since. His performance here suggests an actor ready to age into meatier dramatic roles, even if the occasional comedic beat reminds us of glories past. Fahadh, reliable as ever, makes Daya's transformation feel earned despite the script's shortcuts.

The ending falls into that tired trap where cops arrive precisely when convenient, with everything gift-wrapped for easy resolution. After all that moral murkiness, such tidy police work feels almost insulting.

Maareesan works best when it lets its contradictions breathe - two criminals finding kinship in their damaged moral compasses, each justifying their crimes through different lenses.
