Today is a special day for the team of Chennai 600028, for it’s on this day, 13 years ago, that the film released and went on to become a massive success, both critically and commercially. Directed by
Venkat Prabhu, the film stars a host of boys, including his brother and musician Premgi, Jai, Shiva, Nitinsathyaa, Aravind Akash, Vijay Vasanth, Ezhumalai and Prasanna, among others, in the lead.
The film’s storyline - about how a local cricket team, The Sharks, battles all odds within the team and with the outside world to win a tournament – struck a chord with cricket-crazy us.
Venkat Prabhu took to his social media handle to write, “Wow 13 years!!! #chennai28 thanks to one and all for the love for the movie and for us!! Owe u @charanproducer na!!(sic).”
The film not only celebrated gully cricket but also brought out the flavours of Chennai. The soundtrack, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, was also a chartbuster. Interestingly, it also marks 13 years of Venkat Prabhu as a director, for he made his debut with the film. The team that made Chennai 28 has continued to work in other films, too, including its sequel, Saroja and Goa.
