Actress Anjali talks about her role in Thoonga Nagaram and her plans for 2011...
Anjali is a tad tired of doing performance-oriented roles. She got one in her debut film, Katradhu Thamizh, for which she received critical acclaim. And she got another chance with Rettaisuzhi in which she rubbed shoulders with the likes of K Balachander and Bharathiraja. The icing on the cake, however, was the Vasanta Balan-directed Angadi Theru that fetched her international recognition.
But now, the actress wants to spread her wings and explore commercial cinema too.
1x1 polls
Yes, in 2011, Ill choose projects which are commercially viable as well, states she.
Currently, the actress is looking forward to Thoonga Nagaram in which she co-stars with Vimal. I play a girl called Radha, who works as a compere in a local TV channel in Madurai, she reveals, Shes a proper Madurai girl. She isnt stylish. Its something I havent tried before and I had quite a tough time speaking the Madurai slang the way it had to be spoken.
The slang, she recalls, had a lovely raga in it that she fell in love with. For my role in Angadi Theru, I learnt the Tirunelveli dialect with some help. However, for Thoonga Nagaram, there were no trainers to help me as most of the films cast was from Madurai and needed no help in the slang. I somehow managed to get a grip of it after a few days of shooting.
Anjali singles out the shoot for a song,
Koorana Paravaigal..., in the film and terms it very interesting. So, what was so special? We shot in exotic locations near Malaysia but the audience will never be able to tell the difference between the locales there and Madurai. The visual palette that these locations threw up were very interesting and have been showcased beautifully in the song.
The actress will soon be seen in a project produced by A R Murugadoss, whose story and screenplay will also be penned by the Ghajini director. Interestingly, Anjali also has a role in Ajiths upcoming Mankatha. Yes, I play Vaibhavs pair in the film. The same production house that is behind Thoonga Nagaram is now making Mankatha and so, when they called me for a role, I readily agreed. Ill also be sharing screen space with Ajith, something that Im really looking forward to, she says.
