Suriyas Singam II is set to hit screens today. This film marks the return of the Hari-Suriya combination. In an interview with Times of India, the actor talks at length about his upcoming film, rising expectations, and more.As a character, how close is Duraisingam to your heart? I believe in being black or white. I dont try to be grey. If I dont like something, I say it.
And, Duraisingam is a bit like that. He has his own values. When someone asks him why youre obeying what your family members said, he tells them, Who else will I obey if not my family? Hes God fearing and likes his work a lot. Thats evident because he respects the police department and treats the police station like a temple. Im also like that Ive got so much from the film industry and so, try to be as true and sincere as possible to my work.
You played a suave cop in Kaakha Kaakha. Is this, a rural policeman, very different?Kaakha Kaakhas Anbuselvan was a loner. He didnt express what was happening in his mind. Even if something big was happening,
hed keep it to himself. But Duraisingham hails from a village thats full of villagers. If they are loud, rough and tough, he has to be louder and tougher than them. From the kind of dialogues and words he uses, itll be evident that hes from Thoothukudi. Anbulselvan and Duraingam are totally different.
When did the idea of a sequel come to mind? After three years of
Singam, when Hari and I got together, everybody was asking what next? Obviously, everybody expected a lot of energy on screen and entertainment. Much feedback was coming in for
Singam, which had an open ending. Im a Duraisingam fan and was thinking if it can get bigger and better. If not for the content, we wouldnt have stepped into it. So, we believed, took responsibility and took it forward. Ive seen the film and I know that we have a winner in our hands.
Youve worked with the same set of filmmakers in your last three films. If Maattrraan was directed by KV Anand, who did Ayan, Hari has already worked with you a few times. And now, youre teaming up with Gautham Menon again Well, I love working with them. If you have a friend with whom you share mutual respect, and grown as a better actor, you want to keep working with them. Expectation keeps growing and you have to accountable for that. With Hari and Singam, you know that youre in safe hands.
What about the younger crop of promising directors? I do want to change tracks, and wish to see myself in a new genre. By next year, Ill announce projects with a new set of directors.
Youve stated that Hansika was a revelation in Singam II whys that? Hansika had to emote for different set of situations it was all challenging, but she handled it with so much ease. There was no nervousness or confusion. Shed just come into a scene, deliver and then say, OK, so what next? She could just switch off and on like that. Thats a special skill. After this film, a lot of people will like her for her acting skills, apart from her charm and good looks.
Tell us about the South African schedule in the film... We shot in the Herb market in Durban, SA. Before the schedule, we were given instructions how to behave there not to look anyone directly in the eye, and all that. It was scary. But the location was so real the Herb market is exactly the way it was 60 years ago. Youll get everything there crows feet, the tail of a fox you name it, and itll be there. They believe those have medicinal properties. When we were shooting, we heard some gun shots nearby. When we enquired, someone told us that two taxi drivers had shot each other in the next street! It was an experience I wont forget.
Is there a possibility of Singam III? It depends on how big a hit this is. Were open to it; well, at least, Im open to it. Its up to Hari sir now as he has to think bigger and better than this one!
Whats the status of your forthcoming projects? Ill be doing Gauthams
Dhruva Natchathiram (DN) and Lingusamys films simultaneously. Were currently fine-tuning the script of DN and we will soon start filming.
Do pressure and expectations weigh on you at times?Yes, it sometimes does. Sometimes, you cant crack a market soon. You have to see the recoverability of a project. Many actors are breaking it for instance, when Kamal sir did
A Wednesday. Smaller films have their own content and audiences, but youll have to release them yourself besides acting in it.
You did a Bollywood film (Raktha Charitra). Any plans to do another Hindi film soon? Ive not got a big drive for Bollywood, perhaps due to my Hindi-speaking skills. I dont want to do a Hindi film just for the sake of doing it. The projects should pull you into them.
