In a recent interaction, Kamal Haasan revealed how he came up with the idea of playing a dwarf and the difficulties he faced before get the project to move forward. The star actor had apparently got the inspiration from Charlie Chaplin who has done one scene in a film where his legs gets shortened.
Interestingly, Kamal Haasan had taken the idea of doing a whole film playing a dwarf to his guru and mentor director Balachander, who had brushed off the idea saying it was too risky since he had already been injured recently during that time. But ace director had kept a scene for Kamal Haasan to play a dwarf in his film 'Punnagai Mannan' to make him happy, but the star actor seems to have taken it a rehearsal for 'Apoorva Sagodharargal'.
Kamal Haasan further revealed that while initially the team members were skeptical about the dwarf character and wanted to have little of him in the film since it was difficult to shoot, he had brought in commercial film writer Panchu Arunachalam to have his opinion after seeing the initial footage.
Panchu Arunachalam was impressed with the dwarf character and instilled the belief that the dwarf character the lead character of the film and later helped with the story of the film.
'Apoorva Sagodharargal' went on to become one of the landmark films in the history of Tamil cinema. After it's release in 1989, the film opened to rave reviews from critics and audience and became the biggest hit in the industry and is still one of the most appreciated films of Kamal Haasan.
