Koozhangal was an honest attempt at filmmaking: Nayanthara
It is well-known that PS Vinothraj's debut Tamil film Koozhangal (Pebbles) has been chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars. The film is backed by Kollywood's star couple, actress Nayanthara and director Vignesh Shivan, for whom it marks their debut production.
With the Oscars just a couple of months away, the Koozhangal team has begun its Oscar campaign by promoting the film in Hollywood. The team has been speaking to Hollywood publications and entertainment websites, sharing the origins of the film and what it means for them to have been selected as India's official Oscar entry.
While it has so far been the director, Vignesh Shivan and creative producer Amudhavan Karuppiah, who have been talking about the film, now, for the first time, the Lady Superstar has spoken about why she and Vignesh Shivan decided to back the Oscar contender.
In an online interview with a Hollywood entertainment portal, which also featured the film's director PS Vinothraj, creative producer Amudhavan Karuppiah, and Vignesh Shivan, Nayanthara had this to share about Koozhangal: "It was an honest attempt at filmmaking. When we saw the film, we just loved the film and the way Vinoth had showed the life that he has seen. So, it was very different for us to see. We just fell in love with the film and felt that we should definitely get it under our banner and this should be the first film that we produced. (sic)"
During the course of the interview, which runs for over 40 minutes, Nayanthara can be seen repeatedly stressing on the fact that she and Vignesh wanted to ensure that the film got the "visibility" it needed through their backing.
Oscar watchers are of the opinion that Koozhangal, which has already bagged a number of awards at international film festivals, has a chance at making it to the Best International Feature Film short list at the forthcoming awards event.
