He is arguably one of the greatest filmmakers the nation has produced. But, his humility belies his creative genius in more ways than one.
At a recently held awards ceremony, where he felicitated debutant director Anusha Rizvi for her groundbreaking film Peepli [Live], the ace director opened up on the apprehensions that are a part and parcel of every filmmaker���������s life.

He says, ���������I have made about 20 odd films. And believe me when I say this ��������� even today, I get the same first-day jitters that I felt when I did my very first film. And it only gets worse with every subsequent film.��������� Mani goes on to add, ���������Having said that, some of the most magnificient films of the world came from first time directors like Orson Welles (Citizen Kane) and Satyajit Ray (Pather Panchali).���������
The filmmaker also revealed his constant need for learning and staying ahead of the curve when he referred to co-panelist Girish Kasaravalli���������s lecture notes and said, ���������As soon as I saw Girish���������s notes, I recalled that scene from Anusha���������s film, where the hungry Natha gazes longingly at the boiled eggs. That was exactly how I felt about Girish���������s lectures. I really wanted to steal them, for I was sure it would be a treasure trove of cinematic wisdom.���������
