This day, 28 years ago, was a special day for Rajnikanth fans across the globe – it was in 1992 June 27 that Suresh Krishna-directorial Annamalai opened to packed houses.
The film remains the favourite of several Superstar fans even today, thanks to the ever-popular songs including the intro song ‘Vanthenda Paalkaran’, his chemistry with Khushbu, his dual appearances, powerful dialogues, music by Deva, engaging tale of friendship, effective antagonists and tightly-woven screenplay.

It was Annamalai which had the iconic Superstar Rajini title card with the pulsating background music for the first time. Hardcore fans of the Annaatthe star took to Twitter and started trending #28YearsOfAnnamalai from Friday night by posting interesting photos and videos pertaining to the film. A few of them released fan-made posters and trailers which started doing the rounds in no time.
The movie marked first collaboration of Suresh Krishna and Deva with Rajinikanth. The director went on to work with the star later in Veera, Baasha and Baba among which Deva was the composer for Baasha. Annamalai, which went on to become the highest grossing film in Kollywood, shattering the previous records, was later released in Telugu was Birla Ramudu in 1995, after the huge success of Baasha in Tollywood.

It is said that the movie was the first film in Tamil to have had a 50-day run in more than 50 theatres across the state. There were 18 theatres in the state where the film had 120-day run. Annamalai created a never-before heard record in screens in Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy areas, too, apart from the popular Aurora theatre in Mumbai.
